We've done a lot!

  • We have sponsored lakeside cleanups annually for some years now.
  • We have long been active in trail construction and maintenance in the state park. We are responsible for most of the hiking trail maintenance. We built the half-mile-long fully accessible Blackhaw Trail, as well.
  • We have installed many bridges and culverts on trails throughout the park.
  • We funded water fountain renovations and paid for the accessible fountain near the swimming beach.
  • We do annual water-quality monitoring at the main inflows to the lake for chemical contamination. So far, so good!
  • We have published a series of field guides for the park and have more planned.
  • We have published a series of maps for the park and surrounding preserve areas.
  • We work with the Athens Conservancy to put on the annual winter Groundhog Hike, held on the first Sunday in February.
  • We have provided and installed carsonite posts with trail information at every trail in the park.
  • We created and installed a number of museum-quality interpretive signs along trails.
  • We have provided a variety of other signage.
  • We funded and oversaw the construction of the humpback bridge over Strouds Run at the Hickory-Trace Trailhead.
  • We built the deckwalk at the campground for the Vista Point Trail, and added an information kiosk to it. The state park has since resurfaced the deckwalk.
  • We built the information kiosk at Dow Lake dam.
  • We funded, designed and oversaw the construction of the information kiosk at the Hickory-Trace Trailhead, which doubles as an emergency shelter.
  • We worked with the state park to create the kayak and canoe launching ramp near the boathouse.
  • We created map bandanas for the park which are available for sale.
  • We funded an archeological/historical study of old homesites on the park.
  • We have been active in removing non-native invasive plants from the park, including both sponsoring volunteer work and funding paid workers to do so.
